The aim of the nursery is to provide a well-rounded curriculum in stimulating and interactive surroundings. We offer situations and activities, which lend themselves to the different areas of learning and development.

The period from birth to age 5 is covered in a government document called Early years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The Principles of EYFS incorporate:

A Unique Child

This area recognize that every child is a competent learner from birth who can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured. Our commitments are focused around development, inclusion, safety and health and well-being.

Positive relationships

This are describes how children learn to be strong and independent from a base of loving and secure relationships with parents and/or a key person. Our commitments are focused around respect, partnership with parents, supporting learning and the role of the key person.

Enabling Environments

This area explains that the environment plays a key role in supporting and extending children’s development and learning. Our commitments are focused around observation, assessment and planning, support for every child, the learning environment and in the wider context-transitions,continuity and multi-agency work.

Learning and Development

This area recognize that children learn and develop in different ways and at different rates, and that all areas of learning and development are equally important and interconnected. Our commitments are focused around play and exploration, active learning, creativity and critical thinking and the six areas of learning and development.

EYFS is a distinct stage and important both in its own right and in preparing children for later schooling. It sets out what is expected for most children by the end of the foundation stage.

It is important to understand that the foundation stage goes through to the end of the reception year. Your child will not achieve some of the goals listed above before they leave nursery. The reception teacher will continue with the same goals, which will give the children additional time and help with their growth in these areas.

  • Communication and Language

This development involves giving children opportunities to experience a rich language environment; to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves; and to speak and listen in a range of situations.

  • Physical Development

It involves providing opportunities for young children to be active and interactive; and to develop their co-ordination, control, and movement. Children must also be helped to understand the importance of physical activity, and to make healthy choices in relation to food.

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

These involves helping children to develop a positive sense of themselves, and others; to form positive relationships and develop respect for others; to develop social skills and learn how to manage their feelings; to understand appropriate behaviour in groups; and to have confidence in their own abilities.

  • Expressive Arts and Design

The arts and design involves enabling children to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials, as well as providing opportunities and encouragement for sharing their thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of activities in art, music, movement, dance, role-play, and design and technology.

  • Literacy

Development involves encouraging children to link sounds and letters and to begin to read and write. Children must be given access to a wide range of reading materials (books, poems, and other written materials) to ignite their interest.

  • Mathematics

This involves providing children with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems; and to describe shapes, spaces, and measures.

  • Understanding the World

It involves guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment.
